Cut wages -- not jobs
Sir -- I think it was TK Whitaker who said the last thing you should do in a crisis is cut jobs. He was right. And that particular piece of wisdom applies today to the public service as much as ever.
Right now the Government is slimming down the public service with voluntary redundancies -- and doing it in the worst possible way.
Those who wish to go can pick themselves, so obviously those who feel they would not survive outside the cocoon will stay. Those with a bit of gumption may take a chance, especially when their departure is being eased with unfeasibly large amounts of money.
