Current crop could only be improved
Letter-writer Dr Maeve White is so right when she calls for radical downsizing of our Dail and Seanad. Our population is roughly that of Greater Manchester, which is adequately represented in the British parliament by eight MPs.
This Government could still redeem itself and win a place in Irish history by quickly holding before the General Election the relevant referenda to abolish the undemocratic Seanad, to cut the size of the Dail to 100 TDs and the number of constituencies to 25, and to abolish expenses for all elected representatives.
There is no doubt that such referenda would be passed. Eighty-five of the 100 TDs would be paid a TD's salary of €80,000 per annum.
