Culture of bonuses must end for all

Less than a week after Finance Minister Brian Lenihan refused to pay staff at AIB their bonus payments, we read about the bonus amounts given to higher-paid civil servants.
It has always been beyond comprehension in my mind why anyone would ever receive a bonus for doing their work. They are already in receipt of remuneration for their expertise and to give them a bonus never made sense.
A certain strand of workers in Irish society has come to expect a bonus at Christmas from their employers, thus showing that it has invaded every single level of worker from the highest paid to some of the lowest, although I suspect that those at the bottom end of the ladder have never received a bonus.
