Crazy rail price differences

Further to my recent letter highlighting the extortionate price of train tickets (for example, a single ticket from Ballina to Dublin costs €48), I have another interesting point of comparison.

I had occasion last weekend to travel to London by a rather circuitous route, which involved taking a ferry to Holyhead and then a train to London via Chester and Crewe. The cost of the train journey was €50.

London is roughly 450km from Holyhead, more than twice the distance between Ballina and Dublin, yet the train tickets are almost the same price!
