Cowen still making dubious decisions

Article 28.7.1 of the Constitution states that the Taoiseach must be a member of Dail Eireann. As Brian Cowen is no longer a member of the Dail, he occupies a constitutional no man's land; one would think he would tread very carefully.
However, last week he made the decision to appoint a failed Fianna Fail candidate in the general election, Darragh O'Brien, to the Seanad. Mr Cowen stated on RTE news that he wanted to give a young Fianna Fail politician a "leg up".
This is an extraordinary decision. Mr Cowen has shown a complete disregard for parliament and the Constitution to use the Seanad for flagrantly party political means. One also has to question the decision of Mr O'Brien to accept such an appointment.
