Cowen knee-deep in blame for woes

While I agree with Frank Cummins (Letters, January 4) that Planet Bertie still houses its most infamous inhabitant, his suggestion that Ahern voluntarily left office to avoid facing the consequences of the economic calamity he helped create is at variance with the facts.

Ahern was dispatched to the backbenches by Cowen when the fairytales emerging from the Mahon Tribunal became too embarrassing for even the most tribal Fianna Failers.

While the subprime crisis was rumbling in the US, we enjoyed the spectacle of a lame-duck Taoiseach disporting himself in foreign parliaments, while a lame-duck Taoiseach-in-waiting continued to ignore the crisis brewing in Ireland.
