Cooney is wrong over Fr Chesney

Your correspondent John Cooney writes about what he calls Cardinal William Conway's "dark secret" (Irish Independent, August 25), and he claims that "the canon law process for defrocking the Derry priest should have been initiated".
It is clear from the report on the Claudy Bombing that the RUC, while they had 'intelligence', did not have sufficient evidence to take action against Fr James Chesney -- he was never questioned or interrogated, even afterwards on his many visits to their jurisdiction.
Cardinal Conway is quoted as saying he knew that Fr Chesney was bad, but he clearly also did not have proof of Fr Chesney's involvement.
