Consultants aren't overpaid in Ireland

IF hospital consultants were really paid above the international norm, as your editorial of February 23 suggests, we would see consultants swarming to Ireland from overseas, particularly from the English-speaking world. We do not.

In 2008, there was an average of only five eligible applicants for every vacant consultant's post in Ireland and there were 10 positions for which there were no eligible applicants.

In 2009, there were 12 positions for which there were no eligible applicants. Figures for 2010 strongly suggest a deteriorating position from the previous years.
