Confederacy of dunces at top
Sir -- I am glad that people of integrity, such as my late father and others, are not around to see how debased the standards of political life have become in the post-Celtic Tiger era when a well paid minister cannot pay for her own bag of crisps.
Furthermore, Gene Kerrigan (Sunday Independent, October 10) is right to ridicule the calls by Peter Sutherland and other 'fat cats' for drastic budget cuts when their private wealth is left intact.
The sad fact is that for many generations, people of intelligence went into the professions of law, medicine, and engineering; while the less intelligent went into banking. Politics, of course, has always attracted the rogues and scoundrels as well as those motivated by patriotism and altruism.
