Commercial rates cut year on year
Madam – Like many Dubliners, I cherish the contribution made by Waltons music shops to the heritage and musical diversity of our city. Growing up in Dublin in the Sixties, the early afternoon Waltons radio programme can still draw great memories. However, great memories should not distort reality. Niall Walton, current MD of Waltons Music (Sunday Independent, Business, November 10, 2013), seems to ignore the fact that, despite plummeting Government support, commercial rates have been reduced nearly every year during the current term of office of Dublin City Council.
He should also know that the BID (Business Improvement District Scheme) is not imposed by Dublin City Council. It is a business initiative agreed by the local business community through a secret ballot. It enhances the work of Dublin City Council.
Improving the commercial viability of the city centre has been and continues to be a core objective of the Labour Group on Dublin City Council. Working with business groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Dublin City Centre Business Association, we are proud of progress to date. Given the power and resources to do more, we will do more. In the meantime we encourage all Dubliners and non-Dubliners to come into our capital city and enjoy all the delights that it has to offer. It's Dublin – you won't be disappointed.
