Coming out the other side
I'd like to respond to the heart-rending letter published in your paper (December 20) from Patricia Parlour, the mother of a man who had been suffering from depression for a number of years who took his own life. I cried when I read it because her pain in trying to deal with this loss comes through so strongly when you read the letter.
Suicide is such a terrible tragedy for family and close friends left behind. I have experienced depression in the past and overcame it with the correct help.
I prefer to use the term 'emotional distress' because depression for me was a blockage of emotions that accumulated and resulted in hospitalisation and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at the age of 20.
