How sad it was this year to witness over 2,000 people queuing to receive a food parcel. The humiliation of it all, and yet the gratitude shown by the recipients, as they quietly went on their way, holding tightly on to their blue bags, and their dignity. Then to see all the homeless sleep out in the biting cold.
As I watched and listened to President Michael D Higgins assure the nation he knew exactly how we were feeling, I bet he did. He will never, on his fat-cat salary, and all the other pensions he receives, ever have to worry about where his next meal is coming from, nor will he ever understand what it must be like to lose your dignity or your self-esteem.
I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like, and the courage it must take for those people to stand in line to collect a food parcel. When you look at the clowns we elected, together with their so-called special advisers and the obscene salaries they awarded themselves, it is stomach-churning. The last government had the most expensive advisers, and look what happened. How were we ever taken in by Kenny?
