Cloud cuckoo land

• I was incredulous to read Brian Hayes's view that "Ireland's future is inextricably linked with the future of Europe. There are no easy options. We cannot magic away our problems. But Ireland is now in a better place than it was 12 months ago". Talk about a sanguine, cloud cuckoo view of the dire financial situation that most Irish people now face.
I ignore the view of Mr Hayes that the end of the eurozone would inevitably spell disaster for us all. How much worse could it get? European leaders were all culpable, our own Brian Cowen, Papandreou, Berlusconi and Zapatero, many having left financial catastrophes behind them.
Perhaps they were powerless to save a currency doomed from the outset via its faulty construct? But surely a debt crisis in one small country didn't have to bring us all down.
