I applaud you for advocating eating less meat (Irish Independent, October 24) as a way to mitigate climate change and greenhouse gas emissions and as the best defence against coronary heart diseases, strokes, cancers, obesity, high blood pressure and other ailments.

However, it is more complicated than that. For example, the decision to expand Europe's largest airport, Heathrow, would have dire consequence for Ireland too. Climate change is a global and man-made crisis.

Humanity stands to lose if we fail to stick to 2C above industrial levels. The world has already reached a tipping point where the severe impacts of global warming have resulted in irreparable damage to our health, forests, food supplies, environment, security and financial markets.
