•Patrick Byrne's letter (September 1) is typical of all anti-public-sector rants, big on bluster but seriously lacking in facts or balance.
One of the central aims of the deal is to reduce public-service costs through a reduction in the numbers employed.
As acknowledged in the agreement, our public service has contributed massively to the reduction of our national debt. A combination of multiple pay cuts, levies and unfilled positions has seen the public service pay bill drop by almost €4bn.
