Church must use sworn statement
I believe that the title of Brendan Butler's letter ('Church works off same old script', Letters, August 27) is very astute and appropriate.
Given statements by a leader of the Roman Catholic Church, I also believe that it would be very unwise to assume that this script is telling the truth.
In the report by the Commission of Investigation into the Archdiocese of Dublin, Cardinal Desmond Connell explained the concept of "mental reservation" as follows: "There may be circumstances in which you can use an ambiguous expression realising that the person who you are talking to will accept an untrue version of whatever it may be -- permitting that to happen . . ."
