Church has made the Irish passive
The Irish are the world's best at suffering in silence. I am convinced that the essential ingredient for any dictatorship is an excess of religiosity.
Our dictatorship is a very Irish dictatorship, where we act as guards on ourselves, stamping down dissent within before it seeps out to form a recognisable and stated position.
There is a correlation between our extraordinary passivity as a people and the degree to which a perverse form of dutiful, unquestioning religious observation was drilled into us.
