Church failure let children suffer
THE cardinals, archbishops and bishops who were in office immediately prior to 2005 were culpable of collective failure. They did not ensure that their colleagues were operating in full compliance with the new system as they had agreed to in 2002.
Even with the writing on the wall they failed to press for enforcement verification measures, and the vitally necessary administrative and cultural church reform. The ultra conservative Cardinal Desmond Connell and his supporters just didn't get it.
A principled, collective stand by a dissenting minority could have forced change by going public. But the authoritarians won the day, and enforced a unanimity of silence in defence of the indefensible. They then proceeded to insult the intelligence of the Irish people. Again.
