Christmas classic that has plenty to teach the modern world

Brian McDevitt (Irish Independent, December 5) recommends reading 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens as an annual Christmas tonic. We, too, in our house, share that refreshment.
Many years ago the following passage, read aloud, really stopped the show.
