‘Christmas’ a day off for everyone

ALAN Fairbrother (Letters, April 3) asks if I and others who want to choose non-Christian days to go to the pub will be available to work on December 25.

The answer in my personal case is no, as non-Christians had the period around then as the winter solstice celebration, long before a medieval pope decided to standardise many different Christian holidays on that day based on very little evidence.

He should check his religious history before he tries to choose such a cheap jibe.
