As both a teacher and parent, I have been completely aghast at recent announcements from the Department of Education and minister Ruairi Quinn.

The minister keenly points out a decline in literacy and numeracy as highlighted in the PISA report, and accompanies this with a further burdening of teachers' and parents' efforts: cuts to resource teachers for Travellers; cessation of allocation of any further resource hours; no further SNA positions to be granted; and profound cutbacks in the area of special language teachers.

So while bankers, retired TDs and ministers continue to coin millions from the Exchequer Traveller children will be left to educate themselves.
