Business as usual for politicians

Sir -- As citizens of Ireland we are entitled to a President for our country. This is a legal right guaranteed by our Constitution. The Constitution itself belongs to the people and it is superior to politics and politicians. That being said, it was up to the county councils and members of the Oireachtas to nominate candidates. Let me be clear, this is not a privilege for our political elite but a constitutional obligation. The refusal of certain members of the Oireachtas to nominate presidential candidates is not only prolifically ignorant but outright unconstitutional and shows that there has been no change in the way our politicians do business.
