Burnt-out wreck a fitting monument to official neglect

Magnificent in its unique and lofty position, the former Our Lady's Hospital building stood majestically for centuries overlooking Cork city, often beautifully reflected in the still waters of the River Lee below.

Today, it is a burnt-out wreck, a smouldering ugly monument to official neglect by the usual culprits, the HSE and Cork City Council. And, typically, nobody got angry, and of course nobody will be held responsible, and guess who will pick up the tab for the mess?

In a society so inured to scandal heaped upon scandal and where public monies are squandered daily like confetti, nobody gets angry anymore.
