Burden must be shared equally

MANY at the very top of our society still fail to see that their refusal to take a just and proportionate share of economic pain provides lower-paid workers in the public service with a valid reason to escalate their industrial action.
Civil and financial disorder must inevitably follow. All of this will be watched by financiers in the international money markets. If they turn off the borrowing tap to the Government, the machinery of State will simply grind to a halt.
If that happens, how will the State meet its obligations to pay salaries to public servants and pensions to its former employees? And how will our enormous social welfare and HSE bills be funded?
