Budget pain will hit the poorest hardest

ON his way into the briefing at the Department of Finance on Monday, Fine Gael's finance spokesman Michael Noonan stated that whatever pain was necessary to restore the economy must be "fairly" spread.

On his way out this sentiment was not repeated, but dire warnings regarding the size of the mountain of pain that is necessary were.

Maybe in the course of these events he chanced to chat with his colleague Leo Varadkar who busied himself over the weekend, telling a gathering in Kenmare that Fine Gael in power would address the problem by cutting €3 of spending for each €1 of tax increase.
