Brother, can you spare a country?

'BROTHER, Can You Spare a Dime?' is the title of the US Depression-era song that came to immortalise an age, and the degree to which the previously successful participants in a building boom had fallen on hard times.

The potency of begging from those who benefited from the sweat of the brow of the labourers that built the dream sends a shiver through the bones.

During the US Depression, those upon whom fate smiled had to walk past the casualties of the nation's irrational economic exuberance and look them in the eye, or they chose to look at their feet in shameful avoidance.
