Bringing rugby to the masses

ALTHOUGH I am a committed floating voter, I would like to commend Minister Eamon Ryan and lend my support for his proposal to make the Heineken Cup free to air.

While I acknowledge that the IRFU is a non-profit organisation that ploughs all revenues back into the game, its myopic view that keeping the status quo will secure its ongoing success (where in reality it’s only the well-heeled who can afford to watch these matches) is, to my mind, ill-founded.

While no one can deny the success that Irish rugby has had in recent years, there is no evidence or precedent to back up its claim that this success would disappear should some of the (highly exaggerated) funding be removed. It may require the IRFU to work a little harder. Perhaps that is its real issue.
