Bringing maths back to basics
IN all the discussion about the poor results in maths in the Leaving Cert, I have not heard anyone say that the "foundations" need attention.
That is to say, how the basic principles and concepts are taught at primary level, giving children confidence from day one. Also, there are lists published of subjects in which girls did better than boys, but little about subjects that boys do well in.
And except for a loose mention of science, nowhere is there any mention of physics and chemistry. Surely an appalling omission in 2010!
