Blood from a stone

• The Budget for 2012 included a new tax, unfair and unjust, that was pushed through without consideration for older or poorer sectors of our society: a flat charge of €100 for every household unit in the country.

Things went quiet during the referendum -- the bullies were confined to their bunker. But now they are free again to declare another war of intimidation. Get the 'tax dodgers' -- three warnings, then court -- mention of 'making examples'. Not very democratic in a State that prides itself on democracy.

Like many of my generation, I worked hard, often for poor conditions and pay. We paid our taxes -- often penal. We are not tax dodgers -- we are pensioners.
