Bleat the Irish

• Some years ago, an American singer called Melanie recorded a tune called 'Look What They've Done to My Song'. Now perhaps our own Pete St John should consider composing a similar ditty.

Mr St John's most famous melody, 'The Fields of Athenry,' has become an anthem for Irish rugby and soccer supporters. It is quite ironic that a song, which was written about one of the most tragic periods in this country's history, should be sung in celebration of sporting victories -- and defeats.

While the Republic of Ireland were dismal flops in Euro 2012, some commentators tried to cheer up the nation with suggestions that the "wonderful supporters" were the best fans in the world.
