•Martina Devlin rightly chides Bishops Magee and Boyce for their blinkered reactions to the crisis engulfing the Catholic Church, but their responses are entirely typical of what we have come to expect from the Irish hierarchy (Martina Devlin: 'Church is self-destructing in response to sex abuse', Irish Independent, August 25).
It is almost impossible to describe the institutional blindness, the strategic amnesia and the mechanical reciting of rules to excuse the inexcusable, displayed by the hierarchy.
Future revelations about the sexual torture of children will undoubtedly elicit the familiar litany of obfuscation, evasion and compulsive buck-passing. When will it stop?
