Big chill exposes official failings

Last Friday some 30-40mm of snow fell in this part of Co Cork. Once again the whole place comes to a standstill. No doubt there will be numerous accidents, many days of work lost, schools closed and shopping days missed -- all because of no forward planning.
Only main roads are gritted but the problem is, we live about 600 metres from the main road and to get down the hill you are taking one mighty risk.
I read in last weekend's 'Sunday Independent' that another minister is jumping ship with €300,000 plus and €1m is to be spent on ministerial cars . . . yet the council here can't deliver grit and salt to communities where I'm sure people would keep their own roads clear. We now face compacted snow up to Christmas and no chance of getting out!
