Beware of FG's right wing
Sir -- Many were satisfied with Fine Gael and Labour forming the new government in March. Enda Kenny, as Taoiseach, represents us well and has restored respect and decorum to the office of an Taoiseach. Importantly, he and Labour leader and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore worked well together in welcoming Queen Elizabeth and then US President Barack Obama on his stopover last month. It created a feelgood factor, long missing for the three years under FF/Greens.
Unfortunately, there is this strong right-wing tendency in FG that can break out, and I don't think Enda really agrees with it, and against which Labour needs to be vigilant.
According to some FG TDs, (Sunday Independent report, May 29), everyone in the Dail agrees with the Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton's idea of making wages more competitive, especially overtime rates currently in place for the catering, retail and hotel sectors. They insist that in order to retain jobs, wages will have to be cut and everyone has to make sacrifices. (Everyone except TDs, it seems to me.)
