•There was a time when I thought the sun shone from Bertie Ahern. However, subsequent behaviour soon changed all that.
Glimpsing at a headline recently, "Former Taoiseach surrendered total of €83,000 in ministerial pension last year", helped restore some of my original confidence in the man, warning me not to be judgmental. "A decent old chap with a bit of conscience after all", is how I thought now. But, lo and behold, further down the same column I was informed Mr Ahern had received more than €10,655 in mobile phone expenses since 2008, and has claimed €367,184 under a scheme that allows former Taoisigh employ secretarial assistants. If this lavish spending is not riding the goose that lays the golden egg -- and the hardworking taxpayers of Ireland -- into the ground, call me what you may.
