Be careful what you wish for

Sir -- Your editorial (Sunday Independent, Dec 19, 2010) drew parallels with the US in the early thirties and came to the conclusion that 'we need our own Roosevelt to emerge'.

You did not mention that at the same time as Roosevelt emerged in the US, Hitler emerged in Germany. That had less happy results. He emerged in a situation similar to ours in which Germany had a large foreign debt which was imposed by outside powers.

We should, therefore, be careful that the lessons we learn from history are the appropriate ones.
