Basic rates of pay must be protected
PHIL Miesle should be careful what he wishes for. He should at least be transparent about his own situation -- is he self-employed, senior management, consultant, freelancer?
There are many of us who will go through working lives not having to band together in a collective of employees. Such is the flexibility of the modern economy -- serial contracting, casualisation of the workforce and performance-based pay. All these have a place in the modern economy.
However, when senior management in organisations lose the plot despite earning high levels of pay, plus bonuses, and when employees can be bullied to get rid of the 'dead wood', then unions have their place.
