Banking inquiry will only bury the truth

BRIAN Cowen's defence of his government's closed, 'light touch' bank inquiry on RTE's 'This Week' radio programme crystallised for me the only truth to be established by this inquiry: the mugged will not get justice from their mugger.
The French operate a system of investigating magistrates, judges who are empowered to cut across all areas of the French political and judicial system to investigate complex cases of wrongdoing.
This is the kind of system that we require to get justice. It would also act as a standing deterrent for politicians in the longer term.
