Isn't this exactly what happens when a society goes into economic starvation mode? Notions of deserving and undeserving poor, 'the feckless class', the 'coping class' and the 'we can't tax the rich in case they leave the country class', are making a dramatic comeback.
National unity, like the weather in Ireland, is a harsh and changeable reality. And the worst is yet to come.
