IN recent weeks the media storm surrounding women in politics has baffled me.

The lack of women in politics is not the problem. In my opinion, the strongest, most intelligent and most talented politicians should be in power, be they men or women. The women of Ireland know their outstanding capabilities and understand the challenges politics poses.

If such women want a career in politics then let them pursue it. Do not blame a system that in no way prevents women from participating just to cause a media frenzy. Personally, gender has no bearing whatsoever on the direction of my vote.
