'Backroom' staff will be missed

Jim Boylan is incorrect in his very brief analysis ('HSE won't miss 5,000 employees', Letters, November 3) about the extent to which health services will be affected by the loss of so many workers in such a short time.
The workers eligible to apply for the HSE's voluntary redundancy scheme are the personnel that provide vital support to the clinical staff in our health service.
It has become convenient to distinguish between 'frontline' staff and 'backroom' staff in a manner that suggests that, somehow, the latter are surplus to requirements.
