Authorities need possession rules

THE reports (Irish Independent, October 12 and 13) in relation to home repossessions demonstrate the urgent need for the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government to issue guidelines to local authorities as to how to deal with the unfortunate circumstances where a household has received a repossession order but left their home prior to legal proceedings being concluded.

It is appalling that families in these circumstances should fear that they will be considered to have made themselves voluntarily homeless and so be deprived of support.

Under the Housing Act of 2009, local authorities are required to assess households' eligibility for social housing on the basis of their need.
