Austerity only for steerage
Madam -- We are all aboard the good ship Euronic, sister ship of the Titanic. The builders and owners of this leviathan keep ensuring us she is unsinkable. Every luxury imaginable is here for anyone in first class, while we in steerage are to be kept in austerity indefinitely. We have just collided with an iceberg of debt and water is causing contagion in the compartments.
Worse than this, there are only enough lifeboats on board to save those in first class. The rest will go down with the ship.
Lucky are those who are like Fr Browne, who on seeking permission in Cobh from his superiors to stay on the Titanic as it headed out to cross the Atlantic, was told: "Get off that ship."
