Assault on nature
•The news that we have lost half of our farm birds (Irish Independent, September 1) is more than shocking; it shows just how far our assault on nature has gone.
I wonder how much of this is down to the Rural Environment Protection Scheme/local authority policies of reducing our hedgerows to mangled, shorn stumps, thus removing habitat, nesting sites, food supply, shade and shelter for these birds? A blind goose could see the results of this coming; but perhaps blind geese are losing their foothold here, too.
