Anti-union jibes have no real basis
Aidan Hampson (Irish Independent, December 1) levelled a number of allegations against the trade union officials who addressed last Saturday's march, which deserve reply.
For the record, I have never served on any board, public or private. Moreover, I have always made it clear that I never will. Trade unionists should seek every avenue through which to influence the agenda on behalf of working people. However, the president of our union should not serve on public boards because of the way in which it is misrepresented. Our rule book also prohibits any other employee of the union from benefiting personally through serving on any body to which they are appointed.
Yes, I do deal with government ministers. The electorate decides who is to govern. I also deal with builders and other employers to represent our members. This hardly amounts to "rubbing shoulders with them". I have never participated in a foreign junket.
