Airlines cannot be blamed

Sir -- In relation to compensation for air passengers stranded in various destinations, I fail to see why airlines should be held to ransom for compensation for an event that is completely outside their control.

The Icelandic volcano and the resulting plume of ash are extenuating circumstances for which no airline should be held responsible.

If an airline cancels a flight because of a technical problem with an aircraft, well then of course they should be obliged to cover reasonable expenses of their passengers until they can get the aircraft operable or a replacement aircraft in place to continue the journey.
