Ahern could have acted over rapist

I was astonished to hear Dermot Ahern's response to the release of rapist Larry Murphy: "Any suggestion that I can, as minister, change a court sentence is just absolutely nonsense."

The reality is that he could have done something. He and his administration had 10 years to react but, instead, sat on their hands and did nothing.

They could have retrospectively changed legislation to provide for post-release supervision, or implemented tagging so that Murphy could be electronically monitored.
