Achill Island for dignified parade
Madam – In response to Katherine Grace (Sunday Independent, March 24, 2013), I would encourage her to come to Achill Island to experience beautiful and dignified St Patrick's Day celebrations.
No floats. No commercialism. Instead, five pipe bands, from the island, start very early in the morning, march through their respective villages and come together as a 'mass band' in the afternoon. A delightful and colourful sight of unity to behold, with wonderful music to enjoy. This happens every year – rain, hail or shine. Of course, the amazing backdrop of the magnificent landscape of Achill and the Atlantic Ocean add to the breathtaking spectacle and sense of enjoyment. And yes, she will hear Hail Glorious St. Patrick in the churches too. A date for her diary in 2014!
