• Mary Kenny is right. Placing all sexual violations to children under the heading of child abuse is unwise. It can even be very damaging to those who have been seriously violated by rapes. Recently a friend came to me in distress because her sister had confronted her with some 'pull yourself together' advice -- saying "my work colleague was abused by a paedophile and she didn't let it bother her too much, so neither should you." This made my friend feel very hurt, isolated and misunderstood.
One can see why, when the incidents under my friend's 'child abuse' heading include being tortured into silence at five, confined in a shed, shackled until she conformed to rapes that continued until she was 10.
Under the same heading of 'child abuse', the other girl listed being groped on three occasions at 14.
