Abortion debate off on wrong foot

As usual, when the issue of abortion in Ireland is in the news, the scaremongering starts.
Dr Richard Gavin (Letters, December 21) contrasts the current documented abortion rate of Irish citizens with that in the UK. But why this comparison?
Why not a comparison with the rates in the Netherlands (a country commonly seen as "liberal") or Austria (also a predominantly Catholic country)? Are they too low for Dr Gavin's purpose?
