A warm royal welcome

Sir -- The State invitation by Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in May, which has been accepted, is without question a major milestone in British/Irish history which all people of goodwill must welcome with open arms.
Little did I think when I instinctively addressed her majesty when she attended the official opening of the Island of Ireland Peace Park in Messines Ridge, Belgium, in November 1998 that my wish would become a reality.
As we assembled at the entrance to the park to be received by President Mary McAleese, Queen Elizabeth II, King Philip of the Belgians, and his queen, we were drilled on the decorum of the occasion by a member of the Irish Embassy staff in Brussels.
